Used as a herd dog during the Middle Ages, facing extinction in the 1800’s, saved by breeders in Stuttgart in the early twentieth century, the Rottweiler is used today for tracking, herding, police work, obedience trails and he proved to be exceptional good as a guardian dog.

The Rottweiler has the potential of being a good companion, very loving and also very funny or he can be very serious, not at all sociable. Obedience training and socialization in early life is very important for this breed.

Rottweilers are known to be territorial and protective of their environment and family. This is the kind of dog that likes to feel in charge. Being a very powerful dog and having an undeserved reputation as a vicious dog, the Rottweiler is intimidating and should never be let unattended in public spaces or when you have guests.

If raised around them Rottweilers can do well with children, but should be supervised around small children due to their sheer size and power. If socialized properly the Rottweiler will behave well around other dogs despite their combative and aggressive nature.

Grooming is relatively easy; the Rottweiler has a short and glossy coat. Brushing with a firm bristle brush regularly should take care of any excess hair.

A firm and dominant hand must be used when training a Rottweiler. He is an extremely intelligent dog but he can be stubborn sometimes.

If you don’t have a yard where the Rottweiler can play, make sure you have the time for at list one long walk everyday; this breed is an active one.
